Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Just generally, the types of help available really depend on the type of difficulty you experience. Do you suffer from social anxiety? Maybe some counseling would help. Do you have auditory processing disorder as well? An audiologist might be able to help.
But, if it's an employer asking then they're probably thinking that you may need some "reasonable accommodation" in order to do your job well/adequately. If that's the ase you might benefit from thinking about the things about you that your diagnosis explains and how those impact both the stated tasks associated with your job as well as how they affect you interactions with other employees in areas like teamwork and navigating office politics. Also, if this is the reason someone is asking you might consider whether you could get helpful advice from a caseworker (if you have one) or from a disability rights attorney.
Please feel free to comment if none of this applies to you or if you have other questions.
