Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
I joined this group a couple of months ago, but haven't posted here yet...my son is autistic, non-verbal, hyper sensitive, and 19. He tends to go into violent meltdowns where he smacks his head, etc. Today I got a call from one of the supervisors of the program his is in, to inform me that he had put his head through a glass window of his worker's car. The paramedics checked him out, and other than a couple of shallow cuts, he appears to be okay..I have to watch him for signs of concussion, but am keeping my fingers crossed...it appears he got lucky this time...but what happens 'next time'?

I have 3 kids. 24. 17. 15. My 17 yr old has become super defiant. He and his 15 yr old sister have on their own decision stopped going to their dads because he and his household is so toxic.My 15 yr old and myself feel like we have to tip toe around my son who is 17. And physically towers over us and out weighs us. He has become emotionally abusive and on the verge of becoming physically...
Thankfully, his injuries were minor. I hope the program is using proper techniques to determine why he was so upset. Even for non-verbal kids they should be able to teach coping, and help requesting skills to help with this - and non-verbal does not mean unthinking or even unable to communicate.

I wonder, what were the circumstances that led to his behavior? Sometimes noting the pre events before the fit helps to identify what triggers the behavior.
Lastly, I would also consider the person who was with him at the time. Some know how to work with people who live with autism and some don't have the skills.
