My first grandchild had a heart transplant at the age of 8 months. He is now diagnosed w/autism. We are all traumatized and I believe my daughter and SIL are both in denial. They have done almost nothing to help my grandson. They are making HUGE financial sacrifices for his therapy and schooling (he can't be in daycare b/c his behavior is out of control) but it only provides him w/ 2 hours of ABA therapy a day. He is a VERY picky eater so he eats nothing but mac and cheese and McDonalds chicken nuggets - TWO items full of fat, salt and crap. Not good for his heart - not at all. They have not attempted to begin potty training and spend all their time, when not at work, on FB. I'm at my wit's end. I'm retiring soon in order to try to work through the maze of services (hopefully) and financial help. I am just SO discouraged.....I'm having a hard time coping.

It isn't unusual for parents to be in denial over their child's problems. As gma you are a step removed and easier to accept in a lot of ways.

You don't say how old your gs is, potty training starts later for many on the spectrum. They maybe waiting for him to show interest and he isn't.

I'm glad your gs has you to fight for what he needs:)

i've often said that when someone first gets an autism diagnosis, we go thru much of the same steps as one does during the grieving process. denial is usually the first step. do the research... print things off and give it to them as it pertains to your grandson.
