Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
most stimulating toys for autistic kids?
WENDYT
My daughter is Autistic, and we are looking for stimulating toys for her for Christmas. She will be 3 on Nov. 23. She already has blocks, a spinning top, a plastic spikey ball, squishy balls, wooden puzzles, shape sorters etc....
Those of you who have Autistic kids this age- what toys do they find the most stimulating, fun and exciting? Her speech is EXTREMELY limited. Maybe there is something that would help her grasp a few words?
Thanks
Wendy

My son at her age liked anything electronic that made music or spoke or had flashing lights. His absolute favorite was called "light spinner" a long joystick that had 3 spinning fiber optic arms that lit up. It also vibrated in his hand. I got it at Wal-mart at the time. They now have along the same lines a fibre optic fan thats similar - but not as great. Magna doodle, Crayola has a new product "crayola color explosion glow board" V-tech computer, bubbles, elefun, hungry hippos, play doh

My son loves this I spy bag I found. Etsy.com has them all you have to do is a seach. He could spend hours with his leapster handheld thing(if I let him). But thats only because he has a game thats based around dogs. Which is one of his favorite things. They have "learning" games with other popular characters. Some of them read stories. Some of them teach how to write.

This is the perfect age for "role play" When my son was in EIC, OR PPCD, they had a station set up with various costumes, fireman, nurse, doctor, Vet, chef, police, etc. This really helped him understand the functions of public service personnel, what each did, who to help with what emergency, etc. He always drug his clothes out, so I decided to buy these role plating outfits! And right now there on sale!!!!!! After Halloween is the best time to stock up! Also you can get the VTECH system, they make one for babies, it works on colors, sounds, shapes, etc. Alex never liked toys that made noise, still dosen't, except that damn gameboy! and his noise of course! And to work on hand-to-eye coordination, you can buy sets of string with beads of all colors, Walmart also has shapes that have pre-cut holes and it comes with strings of all colors! Alex has fine motor skill delay , so we are still addressing this issue. Oh, he loved the MEGA BLOCKS! Colorful and good for H/E/C too! OMG! Just thought of the perfect thing!!!!! I bought the "Island Princess Mini-laptop" for my 3 yr old niece! It was simple to use, I say this because my 6 year old niece was with me when I bought it, she has deslexia, yet was able to learn from it! I will be buying her one as well!
