Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
I wish I could go back and just not have had more children until later, gotten him more help, married differently, something. I can't go back and change things. That is how I dealt. There are somethings I just could not live with.
It isn't an easy path we are on. If you havent already, find a professional who deals expertly w/ autism and seek their advise often until you find how to make things work. It is what I wasn't able to do. I wish I had.
hugs

He is PDD-NOS and ADHD. He is on meds...Resperidal but it's an extremely small dose about half a teaspoon daily. There are no Behavioral specialists in my area. My husband is in the Air Force , so voluntary relocation is not an option. We are stuck here till 2011.
I'm here with my son 24/7, I get no help and have no family nearby. My so called "friends" never even offer to babysit and act as if my son has the plague, when I offer play dates so he can interact with other children , I'm ignored because their kids don't want to play with him in the first place. I hardly get any type of adult interaction. I'm just really overwhelmed. I love my son dearly but I feel my relationship with him becoming more and more strained. Thanks everyone for the support. I'm so thankful I found DS.
Most of our kids are a bit immature for their ages, I think this is fairly common. And second, sounds like your son is dealing with jellousy toward their younger sibling. Fairly common as well.
The new sibling depends on mom, as does your older one, But now the younger one gets priority. The younger son is held and fed and changed all by priority. Trips/activities for the household are planned around this new arrival, whereas before everything revolved around the older child..... pretty typical
Rather than completely banning the older from the younger, (under direct supervision) allow the older to have some participation with the younger. "Mommy's helper" "couldn't do it without your help" that sort of thing. Fetching supplies, helping change diapers, helping feed the child etc. And Although it is still very hard try more 1+1 time with the older child.
But above all else, do not allow your eyes away from either child... anything could happen.
I will say that although there was no jellousy on my son's part with his sister (maybe because of the ages at the time), but he was ginormous for his age and he tried things like climbing in the playpen. SO I had to watch closely, If anything he was extra protective....
do some research and finda an area that looks promising...good childrens hospitals, therapys available...stuff you need for your child ...and go talk with the base chaplain and base commander.
tell them you situation, special needs child and no decent medical facilitys avalible to you......medical waivers happen.
bring plenty of documentation.....if you can get the medical help
the behaviors will hopefully improve for you .
good luck to you.
