Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
We don't have a diagnosis yet, but I figured I should prepare myself, as this isn't something I ever considered until my son's school brought it up. Which, honestly, took me by surprise.
My son is 6 and we're working on his diagnosis of ADHD and Tourette's Syndrome. In communications with the school they said they want to have their psychologist evaluate him for Aspergers.... HUH? So I went home and turned to the world wide web for info. Aspergers? No, I don't think so. That doesn't sound like my son.......
Well, I guess we'll find out....
But my 3 year old son is the one I'm sort of worried about. He is 3 1/2 years old (41 months) and still can't really talk. He can say a few words, but if you didn't already know what he was saying, you would not know what he's saying. He speaks like he's deaf, but if you're behind him and whisper his name, he'll turn around and whisper, "what?"
He says yes like "esh" , milk is "yilk" juice is "yoosh" house is "oush" but he can nope just fine. LOL
Basically, developementally, he's like a 2 year old.
We have to go through all the steps, first one is a specialist to test his hearing. The doctor says we CANNOT skip this step even though we know he can hear. So now we're just waiting for the next step....

Did he have chronic ear infections as a baby? If so, they may have damaged some of his range of hearing and he may need to see a speech therapist to help him articulate his sounds.
My daughter went through this stage many years ago and I despaired of her ever speaking normally. Now at 25 she talks like any other person, although a bit fast at times.
My "normal" 4 y/o granddaughter had chronic ear infections, necessitating ear tubes. As a result, her speech was delayed, causing her to drop the last sounds of words. I took a lot of time with her, coaching her in the correct way to sound out her words and now she speaks much better.
