Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Does your school system have an autism prgram at the school or in your district.
My daughter was diagnosed in her kindergarden class as high functioning autism but she had serious control issues in the classroom.
she has been with our schools program for 2 1/2 years and is now ready to mainstream for some of her classes.
in our school system here they have speech, ot, and lots of one on one teaching....which your son probably needs.
good luck to you.
My son is 10 behaviors come and then get replaced by something else usally... but not all bad!
the biting who knows my son bit me today for the 1st ever. These special children have these darn quirks and we have to redirect them best as we can. Im sure he will be fine in class :)
I've always told my son that it is perfectly okay to be "different" from others. He is special just the way he is.
He seems confident in that at the age of 13. He likes to wear clothes that do not necessarily fit in with the other kids. As long as they fit, are clean, and he enjoys wearing them I don't make him change just "to fit in".
I have my reasons but I was an obese child and an obese teenager and an obese adult and kids always made fun. There was no way to stop them. I found that my sense of self-esteem was what got me through the worst of it. I won't say that comments and taunts didn't hurt. They surely did. But, I also always knew that the me that counted was what was inside . . . not in my "wrapping".
Hope that helps a little bit. If you don't want to put him back in kindergarten right now consider perhaps holding him back in first grade next year again.
