Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
My son qualifies for his IEP under 'other health impairment". He has sensory problems and adhd. He was tested for autism and, by the skin of his teeth, does not fit the traditional definition, but I was recommended to this community so I hope ya'll dont mind.
My question revolves around the school district. Most recently we discussed next years placement. he will be going into a full day spec ed class; mainly because he is not retaining the information necessary to progress, due to his condition he has failed kindergarten two years in a row - he suffers academically, still cant write his name, does not recognize any site words, and has difficulty socializing.
Currently he received OT and it has helped tremendously. I am told if he is not in the ESY (extended school year) program that he does not qualify for OT services over the summer months.
ESY is not avail to him unless he is in a spec ed class ( he will be next year ). In addition to that I have to prove that he will regress without OT over the summer months.
How am I supposed to prove this to them? Or is this really necessary at all?

The issues you state seem very similar to the spectrum disorders. If it was the school, I would get an independent evaluation by a PhD.
I agree with Twilight, if he is having difficulties, the school is required by law to help him out. Perhaps getting a note from his doctor stating that he will regress if he does not receive services over the summer would help.
