Just wondering what everyone does for the holidays when it comes to big extended family gatherings. My husband comes from a big family. My MIL demands all her children and their families come home for every holiday. While it's annoying, I can deal with that. Here's my problem...she demands we show up around noon and stay until she's ready for us to go (around 9 or 10pm at night...maybe 8pm if a school night). My daughter has PDD-NOS and SPD. Her coping abilities with the large and chaotic situation is about 2 hours. She will hold it together until she can't. Then, she cries, whines, and becomes velcro to either me or her dad. When we get home, there's a full blown meltdown where she is unable to eat, sleep, much less anything else. She will panic and scream that she's going to puke (her way of presenting stress). There is no calming her. It can take many hours and sometimes days to help her back from a meltdown. She has been known to scream and claw me because she's panicking for hours on end. This is why I'm so careful not to push her over the edge. MIL and her daughters do not care. MIL has even witnessed one of these meltdowns (rare that they happen before getting home). I'm the evil person that is preventing our daughter from spending time with cousins and nana (grandma). I offer numerous times for nana to do something with a maximum of two other grandkids and my daughter. She refuses saying she can't possibly choose our daughter over the other grandkids. However, one daughter lives with her and her 3 kids get time with nana. The other daughter has a child that does traveling ball and nana routinely goes on trips with them for it. So, the I can't choose one over the other is crap. Her and I are in a feud over when our daughter goes to family gatherings and how long she stays. She's lied to other members of hubby's family and people in the community. Hubby is incapable of saying anything to his mother and tries to avoid her. When she was super nasty to me and lied to family saying I don't like so and so, we didn't go over for Thanksgiving with hubby in agreement. Instead of attending MIL huge bday party, we took her out for dinner with just hubby, me and two kids instead. He supports my actions completely. When it's been two hours, both of us leave with the kids. Of course, it's my fault that I've turned hubby on his family because he will never tell his family that he agrees with me. So, how long do you stay and how does it work in your extended families? Thanks in advance.

BTW my mil spent the last month of her life making amends for what she had pulled on family members. We don't all get that opportunity!
