Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
How wonderful! I homeschooled my 7 yr old grandson (now 8 yrs. old) for similar reasons as yours. How great it was. He learned to focus. He learned the purpose of school, he learned social skills in the neighborhood coop classes. He went to play dates and playground days and made solid friendships. I was able to take him to daily swim lessons, where he developed coordination, focus and round the clock physical and mental stamina. I was able to get into his head to select just the right way to help him learn and behave. I developed a reward system that worked well by trial and error. There's so much you can do while at home. I individualized his schooling to a curriculum that matched his personality and learning style. He caught up the lost 1st grade, completed 2nd grade and half of 3rd. His evaluation was great. We were so proud. He is now in 3rd grade public school and doing 4th grade work in all but science and history. In those subjects he's on grade level. I tried to prepare him for public school the whole year and I believe we were successful. Some children need more time and some less. I would have loved to have him one more year, but circumstances prevented it. Despite this, he seems to be doing quite well so far. I'm sure there's more work to be done, but he's much better.
Try and relax and enjoy. This can be very fun, pleasant and relaxed.

I homeschool my 10 year old. This will be the second year for us. We do K12. she loves it and is just thriving. Her doctors can't believe the changes for the better we are seeing. I only wish I had done it years sooner.
Good luck! It does get easir when you get a rythem going.
We have always worked with her a lot and she has always been in a regular classroom. I basically figured school was for the social lessons, although she does well in academics. We put her in Young-5's even though she passed the Kindergarten readiness test.
No early intervention here, we were on our own, truthfully I think as hard as it was, it was better for her up to a point and then the social issues at school start really taking over.
It sure sounds like you made the right decision for your child.
Take care
Good for you for sticking up for your daughter!
