Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Welcome to the group.
I'm a middle-aged adult with Aspergers. I have struggled to understand and interact with people all of my life. I agree that people who aren't on the spectrum aren't necessarily normal (or good, or effective at communication, etc.). Many of them have their own challenges, even if they aren't named with a label.
Yet with all this said, I still make an effort to better understand others and find ways to connect. This is not because I think I'm wrong or that they are right, just that forming relationships is an important part of life, and it's a challenge for everyone.
I'd be interested to hear more about your life and experiences. I hope you'll stay active on this board.
I am quite upset today, so I don't have a lot to say. Maybe I will say some more soon. But I would like to stay active on the board so I just thought I would say that.
I'm also a middle-aged adult with Asperger's. I am so sorry for your pain - I have been there!! Just remember that being "normal" doesn't always make someone "right."
I hope you will get to know some encouraging people who will value who you are and what you have to offer this world.
I almost feel like normal people fit into two categories - the ones who expect me to be able to do everything as well and as fast as they can, and WANT to do the things that they do.
And the ones who underestimate me and think I'm stupid.
