I just looked it up. That is just uncalled for. I would not want that kind of action taken on my son. Now adays I think police are being a little too quck to resort to those types of actions.

There was another 15 year old Autistic boy tasered in 2005. This is too much!

These kinds of stories scare the beegeebees outta me for my son. : (

How will they ever learn anything good about our world when they are treated like this???

On the other hand, I didn't read the story and have no idea why the police would have thought they needed to do this to a 15 year old, whether autistic or not.

But, this is just the kind of thing I'm so worried about. It's so sad and how in the world can we protect them from this kind of stuff???

it is sick and i didnt read the resport cuz steven ... augh...
last summer he had a meltdown and i mean a burndown. In target! In front of all these people.
a cop did come to me and said.
" How can I help"
I said do u know how to secure a child?
He said yes.
so he got on the floor w. me and I ended up showing the cop how to secure a child.
we had to get steven stoped.
he was banging his head so hard i thought he blow his ear drum out.
so after he was calm enough
I said Ok we can get him up and walk him out of there,
we did and walked around the parking lot awhile till he was very calm so we could go home.
during this burndown a man came up to me. said.
"im a pediatrion u have to get him out of the store"
I said, No i can not do that when it is not safe in a PARKING LOT with a kid who cant even sit.

so cops do help sometimes. had to add something good..

That is so sad!!

My brother is a cop and he has helped me teach the other ones about Autism in our county.

What a wonderful story, stephensmom. The only thing I've ever gotten was, "it's not against the law to give him a good spanking." : ( Like that would help!!!

Jordanc, Oh no I didn't get that inpression at all either! Just thought I would share because the older our kids get I think cops need to be aware of Autism and who they are.
In fact the cops was called on the little girl I work with thats just 7 by the man she bit. I was so mad! But my brother happen to be the one that was send out on the call and he took care of it very well. You just never know.

I haven't read the story about the 15 year old either and not to sound like I am pro tasing ANY 15 year old but how was the cop supposed to know the child was autistic? I think this is a perfect example of why the autistic organizations out there are promoting the use of identification such as jewelry or badges of some sort. Especially if the individual is nonverbal. And why was no one there with the boy to stop the cop? Seems like there may be some circumstances we're overlooking here and maybe more people are at fault than it seems. Like were the boys parents not there to protect him? Please understand, I'm not siding with the police officer. But I think more could've been done in the situation.

I have had the same questions as you. How would a person realize that a child was autistic??? The one thing I always say is while my child doesn't look "different" he sure acts different but it's not like an untrained person could easily tell.
