Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
In my experience, anxiety needs to be tamed....prayer...affirmations...or throwing your hands up and saying, what the heck, I can handle it. I have tried to tell myself I am not anxious about a situation, but, deep inside I was. It wasn't until I totally resigned myself to the situation....
Grant me the Serenity to accept the things, I cannot change
Courage to Change the things, I can...
and the Wisdom to know the Difference.
Have a wonderful vacation!
Solution? Yogacat hit it on the head - prayer, positive affirmations; knowing that worry doesn't accomplish anything; it doesn't fix anything, it just causes me pain. A lady gave me a prayer that she says over and over when she's stressing "Father God, I know you are with me right this minute". I'll give it to you.
Another thing I've learned to help anxiety - think about your breathing, concentrate on breathing slowly, maybe count your breaths or do a positive affirmation in two parts, on the intake and the output "Thy will . . .. be done". There are also some guided meditations I've downloaded to my iPhone and iPad that have helped, too. Good luck!
I've been in NSR now for a little more than 3 months after a medication switch. I'm so hoping Flecainide is the one that keeps me that way! It is true that the longer I'm in normal rhythm, the more "normal" my emotions are! It's such a roller coaster, isn't it?
I'm working on thinking positively and trying to really enjoy the anticipation of a great trip.....and enjoy the trip itself....without worrying so much. I have to tell you that it is much easier said than done! I wan in the middle of the ocean last year (a Caribbean cruise) when I went into AFIB for 3 days! Probably the most scared I've been EVER, because I was so afraid to go to the ship doctor. I thought there was a good chance they'd ask me to seek medical attention in the ports we were in and I'm not so sure I'd want to do that! Or....I was afraid they'd air lift me off the ship! (Think lots of $$) Thank God I converted on my own! I just don't want to go through that again!
So, thanks again, for your encouragement! I'm going to continue praying and praying and praying and use some of your recommendations so that we can have a marvelous time without the stress of possible AFIB. I'll let you know when we return if I was able to do it! Thanks!
My Dr. told me, the important thing for "me" is to be taking my Pradaxa, and get my Heart Rate to 100. I take Metoprolol, and my HR drops.
As for me, on Flecainide 2 x 50mg per day, I've asked my dr that same question and his answer has been - just take an extra 1 or 2 Flecainide tablets. He said the max dosage for me in a day is 300mg. So that's my plan - just in case.
Since you say you're on Flecainide, I anticipate your dr will give you a similar course of action but ask your dr anyway. My dr says Flecainide is among the best antiarrhythmics on the market today with very little in the way of side effects.
