Metropolol doesnt stop a-fib, it slows down the heart rate. This is known as rate control. It could very well be that your mom doesnt notice when she is in a-fib now because her heart is beating at an acceptable rate. Its good to hear that she isnt having any side effects from the beta blocker, either!

Yes Metoprolol is rate control not rhythm control but it definitely reduced the number of Afib episodes I had when I first started taking it.

I had Metoprolol end a several-hour long AF episode once a year and half ago. Took two hours after taking a 50mg pill in the pocket. However the next (and the last so far) episode I had two months later, Metoprolol failed to terminate it and it took Flecainide to do it.

Good to hear. Metoprolol, like many med.s works/effects us all differently. Some get fatigues others do do. Some even use it as a PIP which I find interesting. Best of luck with your Mom. - Tom

Up-date on Metropolol increase for Mom: The afib episodes are back. We see the cardiologist next month again for a re-check to see how she is doing with the increase of Metropolol from 50 mg. 2x daily to 100 mg. 2x daily. I see now that she tires more easily after 2 months of being on the new dose, But I am dismayed for her that the episodes have returned. The cardiologist stated that if this increase didn't do much for her, that he would want to try Amidodarone. I am not so sure about this drug, but I am not the doctor. I almost feel like if she can tolerate the afib episodes at this point, that she should not try for a cure. Easier said than done for me, as I am not the one with the episodes. But I am very weary about Amiodarone. If she was younger, then okay, but she is 89 yrs. old. She is in the mind-set that she wants the episodes to stop and gets flustered when she has an episode. So the doctor sees her frustration with the symptoms and tries to accomodate her. I know there are several issues going on here. (Sorry). I would like to be prepared when we go to the visit. TY!

I use Metoprolol ONLY when I have an episode. It brings my HR down to a safe rate.

I took it daily for several months when first diagnosed. I had an episode once or twice a month. After I stopped taking it daily, I had an episode once or twice a month.

When I go into afib, I get anxious for it to end. I think we all do. The unknowns in life are a challenge. When I just accept it and do the best I can to live my life, having Faith that it will end, I do better!

I do have an antiarhymethic, Rythmol, that I can take that will usually convert me. I don't take this daily either.

Amiodarone is the last thing I would ever take. The side-effects are horrible. Please google it. I take Metoprolol 50 mg bid, and I've never had any side-effects. I wish your Mom the best.

I googled it and I don't like the effects of it at all. The Metoprolol 100 mg. 2x a day that she's been on for 2 mos. has stopped working. The afib has returned. Ablation is out. She has a pacemaker, takes digoxin, tikosyn, eliquis, b/p medication, Metoprolol and synthroid. Not sure how much more medication she can take. So worrisome. She deals with the episodes, but wants them to stop. Not sure if she is being realistic in thinking that medication will stop the episodes all together. From what I read, it may not be so - and rather than more medication, I'm thinking that at this stage, just learning better coping mechanisms ma be better. Some of the "last resort" meds just seem so scary.
