Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
It's been 73 days since my ablation. Those who remember, I had an infection in a perio pocket in an upper molar two weeks after the surgery. The resulting problems really aggravated my heart and set my recovery back several weeks.
Today I saw the periodontist and he fixed the problem with the upper molar (I now have stiches in the roof of my mouth. That went fine.
The plan was for him to do something similar to a lower molar which had been getting inflamed on and off for a year. When he went to do the perio work, he found a major hole and infection deep in the tooth. The tooth could not be saved and had to come out ... what a job. I'm sitting here with ice packs on my face. Fortunately these two teeth are on the same side of my mouth. He did a bone graft to set up for an implant. This periodontist only does perio and implants, he's an expert ... nice man.
Fortunately, my AFIB did not act up at all. My INR on Monday morning was 2.3, I took my Coumadin Monday afternoon, and none of Tuesday and Wednesday. Will start it again this evening I go back in 3 months for the implant (for the lower tooth). I'll try to keep the pain pills to a minimum because I know they will potentiate the Coumadin.
Taking (I think it was Yogacats) advice, I'm not moving the gauze for several hours. Pain is not too bad right now, we'll see when the shots wear off. Here's where I loose weight again, no food for awhile. Pain pills and 300 mg Clindamycin 3x day for a week.

Glad to hear everything went well! And no a-fib. Its not too cool to have to have a tooth pulled especially if it is a surprise. Sorry it couldnt have been saved. Im not really sure what perio is obviously something with stitches.
I had a tooth pulled in January my INR was 2.4 the day before. In comparison to the other time (about a year and a half before I broke a tooth and had to have it removed this was before I was on coumadin) it did bleed a lot longer (duh) but the dentist gave me some extra gauze to change, which I did. I had absolutely no pain either time but then again I didnt have any stitches. The heeling process was just as fast both times, too. I didnt lose ANY weight.
So, it looks like its time for you to start looking forward to your honeymoon!!
btw, being 73 day since your ablation. when was the last time you had a-fib? Do you think its gone for good? I hope so!

Yes there are a lot of stiches, about 6 on top, and six on the bottom. He had to do some bone reshaping both top and bottom. And a bone graft on the bottom.
Yes, the bottom tooth was a surprise, since the significant problem going in was the top tooth. However, since it was the bottom tooth that was removed (at the last one in the back), I can get an implant. I didn't want to deal with an implant on the top because its a lot more complicated since the sinus cavity is right there.
I guess when we go on our honeymoon in September, I'll still be eating on one side.
Heart pounding, not fast, not irregular. Often a temporary artifact of ablation, may last on and off for several months after an ablation.
Glad everything went well:) Do hope you will be free from pain really soon and be able to eat.

I'm on mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and jello for about a week. Even with no Coumadin for three days, boy that was a lot of blood. It took about 9 hours to stop bleeding. I guess the anti-coagulant really works -g- Guess I won't be able to switch off to the Eliquis until the implant goes in. Three months. The Periodontist doesn't feel comfortable with Eliquis.

Hmmm...seems like a lot of us have tooth issues! Due to scheduling issues, my dentist visit has been delayed until 12 July, after my July drill (3 crowns due to grinding)...I do recall reading somewhere that among the gazillion possibilities for heart issues was problems with the teeth and gums...I also remember reading back issues can result in heart problems...guess it is all part of the "one body" thing. Glad your ordeal is over. I hear they have come a long way with the implants..hope there are no further problems for you.

I am glad you are doing well and your tooth saga has a happy ending. I know some people with implants who are very happy with them.
