Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

I had mentioned that I was running a 50 mile run and today was the day. I had a friend crew for me in case something went wrong. Nothing did. My goal was to try to finish under 10 hours and I did. I was 4th in my age group out of about 30. Afib was not a problem that I could tell but asthma was at least a minor problem.

I wasn't sure how this experiment of one was going to work out but it did. For those that commented and gave their feedback to me, thank you. It helped me clarify the risks involved and made it easier to face the reality of the potential short and long term consequences. The consequences may be long term and could be considerable harm and I'm okay with it.

Congrats Todd on the 50 miler. It is good you don't let the AFIB threat stop you from living your life. My hill workouts are up to 1200 feet vertical, not huge but gradually testing things more and more - What I find interesting is that I have a little asthma too. When I do that blow test, they tell me i'm in the range they consider don't asthmatic but I can feel it some when I run, especially at a fast pace. Anyway, keep it going. Have not done ultras myself but tempted to try one some day.

Wow! 50 miles! That is why I was embarrassed to post that I had done 2.5 miles in 36 minutes and was DYING. It amazes me that there are people out there that can do this kind of amazing distance..add to that the afib, and it is truly a wonder. Good for you! I don't think I could DRIVE 50 miles without taking a nap first!

Snowshoedude: Ultras just require a different mindset. For me it is an exercise in mental relaxation. It's not about the "go" it's about the journey. 1200 feet of vertical is great! Keep working at it and let me know how you're doing.

Bill: I've been in races where I was trying not to finish last. In one, I managed to run past an obese older woman (I was about 40 and she was probably 65) to keep from getting last place. It was not my proudest moment but it is an important reminder that it's not about being old and/or slow. It just means that you deserve greater respect for being out there. keep it up!
