Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
I'm new onset afib, they're controlling rate at this this time with the idea of doing a shock conversion once I'm on Coumadin at a therapeutic level for a month. I'm miserable. I've been obsessed my entire life about PVCs, this is worse. Jumping around in my chest at times, I'm not a happy camper.
I'm on Coumadin, and I was just going to start drinking tea. I fortunately happened upon your post. So, that ended my tea drinking before it started.
There seems to be 2 problems with Teas, one is adding Vitamin K, one is a natural tendency of some teas to act as anti-coagulants. One point was made in my readings concerning your question tonight, that being herbal teas aren't teas in a classic sense. They are herbs consumed as tea. But those herbs do often have anti-coagulation properties, so you'll need to avoid them.
But on Drugs dot Com I found a possible answer you should discuss with your pharmacist. Google the following:
Can one take xarelto and green tea. I have heard that those on blood thinners should not drink?
They are addressing your medication and a specific type of tea. Here's what they said:
"Though green tea is an issue with Coumadin (Warfarin) it is not an issue with Xarelto. That is why people want to move from Coumadin (Warfarin) to Xarelto.
Also the correct term is anti-coagulants vs. blood thinners, as the medication is not thinning your blood, it is stopping your blood from forming clots or coagulating. Hope this helps."
Notice they're limiting their discussion to Green Tea. That means you'll need Green Tea without herbs. It would be safest to clear that with a pharmacist you trust. Modern Pharmacists are Pharm D, a Doctorate in Pharmacology. They have much more experience with drugs and interactions than your doctor. Look up the article as I suggested, and show it to the Pharmacist.
With clearance, and the right tea, it looks like there should be a tea you can safely drink while on Xarelto.
Hope that helps.
Afib is a very scary diagnosis. I was diagnosed in April 2016 but suspect I’ve had it for years before. Read and empower yourself with knowledge.
I am on Eliquis and metoprolol for rate control only as needed. My afib was worse with any rhythm control drugs eg. Flecinaide so I took myself off everything except of course the anticoagulant Eliquis.
Afib affects everyone differently. It is a horrible condition. Different medications work for some and not others. One person can have a glass of wine, another person can’t. Same with coffee, hot or cold drinks, spicy food, etc. It is soooo different for everybody. Once you understand your condition you will feel more in control.
I did stop drinking coffee because sometimes coffee was making me feel anxious and my heart would beat faster and started to drink green tea that is what I drink now everyday, again, I also stop taking xeralto and replaced it with a suplement called MK-7 with vitamin k-2, I alternate it with nattokinase 2000fus.
