Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Welcome.
The most info on pacemakers is at http://www.pacemakerclub.com/ . You don't need a pacemaker if you are persistent or permanent. It is a last resort. What are your issues that you can't just be on rate control? Are they saying you need one?

I have paroxysmal afib and bradycardia. My first Cardio dr. wanted me to take Metoprolol, which took all my energy away. His solution was a pace maker for me. The Metoprolol didn't keep me out of afib, so it made no sense to me to take it every day...let alone have a pace maker so I could take it. I found a different dr. who had a better treatment plan.
I know a dozen people who have pace makers who are delighted to have their energy back, and happy with them. They don't have afib.
May your decision bring you Wellness!!!
A few people have written here about getting a pacemaker, and how it's made a difference in their lives. Might want to check out their posts.
If it were me, would take some time, and consider all the options available before making a decision. Just my opinion.

Anticoagulation and rate control are "must haves".
Rhythm control is "nice to have".

The pacemaker has prevented me from passing out and Sotalol mostly helps with faster heart rates. I have flutter, atrial tachycardia and sick sinus now. 3 weeks ago an adjustment was done on the pacemaker and I haven't had hardly any episodes. The few I have had haen't lasted more than a day. The highest heart rate has only gone up to 115. A great improvement for me.
Don't know if that helps or not but everyone on this site is really thoughtful and kind. Take care.
