Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
One of the more common side effects of Novocaine is related to how the body distributes epinephrine (adrenaline). Adrenaline is released by the body when it senses that its survival is endangered. The release of adrenaline causes the heart to beat at a hard and fast rate. For the patient that is being administered novocaine this can be a daunting experience. When this occurs some patients believe that they are having a heart attack. This side effect of novocaine is easily avoided if the medical professional withdraws the excess fluid in the syringe before injecting the patient.
Slowing of the Heart
Novocaine can slow the heart rate considerably if too much is administered.

It is contraindicated for folks with Heart issues. Some of us are more sensitive to it than others. I am sensitive to Epinephrine. It put me into a month of afib episodes.
I now ask for Novocain with no Epinephrine and that is what they give. me. I asked the nurse the last time I needed it for a biopsy on my foot, how many folks asked for NO Epi. She said, quite a few. I have had No difficulty the last 2 times I've had Novocain with No Epi~
Best Wishes for a Great Day!
When she inquired, she said Yes, there is Epi in the Spinal Epidural, but that I would be OK.
I opted Not to have this injection, for several reasons. Fianally, after many many months, my back got better. Arthritis issues are not Cured, much like Afib, the symptoms come and go in varying intensities.
home I was in afib for about 5 hours. Self converted.
I've had them in my knee with no problem, but different Doc, maybe
different ingredients.
I talked to my dentist about the problem I had last time. He told me they like to use epi when they pull out a tooth, because it insures there will be minimal discomfort and it makes the bleeding stop sooner than without it. He told me to talk with the dr. who will be doing the extraction.....same one who did it before....I am bummed!
