Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
I'm so glad I found this group! I have read the advice people have posted to other newcomers and found it so helpful and informative. At 68 years old, I was diagnosed -- my first episode -- in January 2014 and had my second episode a few days ago. I must say this was a blow; I had convinced myself that the 1st episode was just a fluke.
Have been taking diltiazem and will start Eliquis tomorrow. Had hoped to avoid blood thinners! By the way, I wonder if anyone has some ideas about this: I have been taking an eye vitamin called AREDS 2 for macular degeneration for 3 years. It contains 400 mg of vitamin E. I am assuming that vitamin E is not compatible with Eliquis. Am I right about that?

"You may have a higher risk of bleeding if you take ELIQUIS and take other medicines that increase your risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (called NSAIDs), warfarin (COUMADIN), heparin, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and other medicines to help prevent or treat blood clots. Tell your doctor about all of the medicines you take, including any over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements."

Welcome! Sounds like you should check with your doctor and pharmacist. Check the instructions for Eliquis also.
