You have a great doctor. It took me 2 years to find this all out on my own. But its true and it works. No salt, no sugar and lots of natural fruits and vegetables. Small portions of beef or chicken. We also eat no carbs in our house and I find that when I eat a lot of carbs (like at a restaurant) I can feel the afib all night long. Stick with that Dr. I wish mine would have mentioned this to me.

That issue was also addressed by my EP. I keep salt to a minimum and avoid most processed foods as well. I'm glad you found a doctor who realizes the impact harmful foods have on afib.
Did the EP mention ablation? I'm glad you're gaining useful information as well as sharing it!

It's a nice surprise when a doc can add the human touch of non medical common sense to the equation, I agree as I see sodium and MSG as culprits in making my heart go off. I also have been going to fresh berries with omega oils every morning for the purpose of eating live non processed food. It brought my cholesterol levels to the good side and I feel like it's good for my general sense of wellness.

I also had salt and sugar trigger an afib episode. I've been staying away from the sugar but am giving it up for Lent and thought I'd have a little on Friday night. By 0400 Saturday morning I had ectopics lasting 10 minutes, then we went to the movie and I had a small bag of unbuttered popcorn and within minutes I was in afib lasting 6hrs. Hadn't really thought about it but I'm sure that's what triggered these events as I've been doing really well on the Multaq and am feeling really good. My energy is back and I've lost the lightheadedness and dizziness since stopping the Metoprolol last Monday. Good to hear a Dr. thinking of these other avenues and not just pushing drugs. Hopefully when I call mine tomorrow he'll also listen and won't want to change me to to the Amiodarone, which he said was the next step if the Multaq didn't work.

I didn't know about the sugar and the salt! I started getting frequent afib attacks when I was snacking on candy at work. I get EXTREMELY thirsty and swollen right before an attack--probably due to the excessive salt intake?

Thanks for sharing! My doctor never told me any of that--I have a wholesome diet otherwise. My one and only vice are sweets and now I can't have that either! Ugh!

I had no idea that my sugar and salt intake triggers afib...Why didn't my doctor tell me this..UGH I have just recently been diagnosed and told to come in on tuesday to discuss the findings of myheart moniotr that i wore for two weeks..is there anything eles I should know before going to the drs to discuss with him???

I have been noticing my legs (shins have some minor swelling). My EP noticed this and told me to cut out salt. Is it possible that since I am in constant afib my heart is not pumping enough blood to give me proper circulation? What's the solution to this. Water pills. This is starting to concern me. The EP didn't seem overly concerned. he just told me to cut out salt. I can press on my shin and hold my finger down for about 5 seconds and it leaves a dimple. I have been eating a lot of nuts lately trying to cut carbs. I am borderline type 2 diabetic, so I am trying to eat a relatively carb free diet. Can't eat salt, can't eat carbs, can't eat sugar. I guess I'll live on berries and salad the rest of life like a bear in the woods.
