Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

Hello my friends. Here is what's going on.

I went in for surgery yesterday, but also went into afib. They were unable to get my heart rate down and cancelled surgery until next Thursday. Darn! But I know that everything happens for a reason.

My cardiologist prescribed Amiodarone which I believe is an antiarrhythmic. Is anyone familiar with this drug. The side effects scared the heck out of me, and I didn't even read them all.

I so much appreciate all of your prayers and well wishes. I hope all goes well next Thursday and I can put this behind me.

Oh no, so sorry for the delay! Amiodarone is heavy duty but does do the job, but may not be a med you want to be on long term. I get why they put you on it so you can get the needed surgery done. Many people do very well on low dose with no issues just as others cannot tolerate it. I was on it for 9 months and it did its job but gave me thyroid issues so I was taken off. Most doctors now have what they call an amiodarone clinic and watch you for side effects, which is good. Hang in there, it wil all work out!

Sorry that you have to wait!
Amiodarone is considered one of the most effective meds. My EP will only prescribe it for short term use. But I couldn't tolerate the constant shakes, loss of appetite, and lack of sleep so I ended up taking Multaq for 4 months post-ablation.

With luck you won't experience any side effects, and will be able to have your surgery next week. Don't get discouraged.

Thinking and praying for u. Hope Thursday will be successful - u deserve it! As for Amiodarone, they gave it to me when I had my first a-fib incident in March last year. It is usually used when other meds don't work. My Dr. Told Me he wanted Mr off it ASAP. I took it for a month and tapered it off in 2. Weeks. It did thr "job" but put thyroid level too high. (HYPO) It took several months to. Drop., still a little high but. I won't take any more med. It doesn't do this to everyone so don't worry! The main thing is to get your surgery done. God bless you and you will have lots of prayers:) Keep the faith!
