Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

Can anyone recommend a good home ekg machine that can give enough of a readout so a Dr. can determine the type of Afib? Something where the readout could be printed or uploaded to your computer and emailed? Would an iphone watch series 4 be able to do that? It reads ekg but I don't know how long (how many minutes) of a sample it reads. Thank you

I have afib and had a mini stroke on early September of this year and was diagnosed at that time .
My brothers wife aldo has afib and her doctor told her to get the I watch and iPhone 11 have had the pair for about six weeks, it told me I was in afib in the middle of the night . My cardiologist loves it. I can take a thirty second ekg and put in pdf file and send to cardiologist or save it n show to him on next appointment . This is like have a guardian angel watching you constantly.

As an Apple user I looked at the Kardia, but it was the subscription cost that drove me to upgrade my Apple Watch from a Version 1 to a Version 5. I could have opted for the Version 4 but decided to pay for the cutting edge. As mentioned above you are able to email the ECG as a PDF to your doctor. As long as you properly set up the watch settings to match the wrist and orientation it will take a ECG that closely matches the Lead #1 of a multi-lead ECG. There are some shortcomings. The Apple watch has a harder time making the reading if your finger is dirty (at work) and can't determine if you are in AFib if your pulse is above 120bpm.

Update: I should have mentioned I started wearing my Apple Watch V1 at night when I sleep while the V5 is charging and it did give me a warning in the morning the first time I wore it at night during an AFib episode: "Your heart has shown signs of an irregular rhythm suggestive of atrial fibrillation. If you have not been diagnosed with AFib by a physician, you should discuss this with your doctor..."

I would recommend seeing a cardiologist not a GP. My cardiologist had me wear a monitor for 24 hours. (a small thing I wore around my neck on a lanyard with tabs attached to my chest.) It was under clothing and not noticeable. However, I skipped my shower that day. I returned it the next day. Then he would take a readout from that.

I have extensively researched the options available. If you are interested in the Apple watch, be sure and read the Apple article on their website and the caveats.

I ended up purchasing an Emay ECG monitor. Simple, straightforward and will store 100 readings. The software provides professional ECG charts that you can directly email to your physicians.
