Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
I saw my EP for a 6 month recheck since starting flecainide. Everything was great....no problems. He said that since I was on a low (75mg twice a day) dose that we have room to increase if needed, try another antiarrythmic if this one stops working, or ablation.
Then as he was reviewing my stress echo from about 7 months ago, he mentioned I have a slightly thickened mitral valve. What?? This is news to me. Then he assured me that it is not "clinically significant". OK....but now I have something new to worry about. Tryng to just file that info away for the time being, and concentrate on the positives.
I am also wearing an event recorder for 2 weeks just to make sure I am not having episodes of a fib that I don't notice. So, now I am a little worried about that. I hope I'm not missing anything.....and it is an"uneventful" 2 weeks.

"Leaflet thickening/calcification may prevent the leaflets from properly closing causing leakage. If severe, the result would be the same as valve stenosis.

I will be 60 in Feb. Anyway, your info does make me feel better. I guess in my head I think I'm still 29.
