Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Just wondering what you all think of this.
The last three times I've been in a-fib, I have not gone to the ER or cardio. I have just taken some extra Atenolol, and waited. Twice it has taken 3 full days for me to convert on my own. (One of those times I was actually on my way to the hospital for a cardioversion as per my cardio's request. EKG showed it wasn't needed.)
So.......I'm just wondering if I shouldn't stay in A-fib that long? My HR is generally only around 100, but it is very much out of rhythm. I think I go into atrial flutter after the first few hours of my heart flip-flopping, and then it just seems to quiver until I convert, usually while sleeping.
What do you think? How long is too long? (I see my cardiologist in 2 weeks, and I will be asking him this question. I was just wondering what others do and how long they wait to convert on their own.)

I have always heard the 72 hour mark before they fear coagulation and refuse to cardiovert, so youre right on the border at 3 days.
For me....I was told not to go to ER unless I was dizzy, fainting or had chest pain I usually.had lower HR from taking Beta Blocker and was anticoagulated. Except for diagnosis, I never have.
I was functioning and rate was well under 100 for the 5 days of afib. I had gone into afib because of dose of Epinephrine. It was almost 2 yrs. ago, and I don't recall the details, but, I was nervous, and Dr. said if I didn't convert in a day, to come in for cardioversion when he was on duty. He is head of cardio dept.
