Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

How long between diagnosis and ablation

Another ablation question:

How long between the time you were diagnosed with Afib and your first ablation? It seems that more people are having ablations shortly after diagnosis. And what prompted you and your physician to move towards an ablation?

In Europe ablation is recommended as first line defense for Afib and the US is slowly adopting this line of thinking.. I believe the US Heart Association still recommends, meds first and if at least one fails , then an ablation is appropriate.
I went this route . Was diagnosed in 2009, used Sotalol for two years and had an ablation in 2011, which seemed to have failed after 10 months. Currently I am back on Sotalol and planning for a second ablation next year.

I had my first ablation 2 1/2 months after diagnosiis and failing Flecainide. My physician and I moved forward with ablation in hopes of a cure while still paroxsysmal.

My husband was diagnosed May 2012. Had another episode 2 months later. Cardiologist put him on Flecainide which after 2 weeks started causing nightly episodes. He is now off the Flecainide and has a referral for an ablation the 29th of this month. Hope this helps. Lisa
