Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
How I got off the meds and what I did to heal myse
DougL
I posted some info a while back and had some private communications recently so I thought Id publish my experience here so if even 1 person benefits then the post is worth it.
I was 52 (in 2004) when I got Afib so bad that only if I sat in a chair and did nothing was my rhythm normal. Even talking on the phone was too much stress for me and my heart went in to fib mode. I was tested on the Holt Monitor and was given Propafanol (Rythmol) , 150mg every 8 hrs and was told when that had no effect (usually after 1 year or so) I could look forward to stronger meds. Meds for the rest of my life. My blood pressure is normal, resting heart rate is 70 bpm. Ive been doing Tai Chi once or twice a week my entire life, weigh 185 lbs am 6 ft tall, stopped smoking in 1974. I know coffee triggers my afib as when I was in Abu Dhabi in 1980 and drank lots of Turkish coffee I soon got very ill with afib going on so I had to eliminate that. Also, I saw when I overate (thanksgiving, etc) through the years Id have afib for an hr or so. Then it got to this state and I decided I was not going to put up with that, I was going to get healed no matter what I had to do, where I had to go, what I had to learn and I sure as **&&^% was not going to get the ablation procedure. To me, how could damaging a part of your heart work towards getting healthier?
I went to a naturopath and with my research in addition to his knowledge we discovered I had / have what is termed Lone Atrial Fibrillation, which means the medical establishment does not really know what causes it. My research turned up Dr. Hoffer who started practice in 1952 my birth year. While he is most known for using Niacin in treating mental illness, his work also shows Niacin to benefit afib. He recommends 2 or more grams, I found that 1 gram of non-flush niacin, 250mg of magnesium, Omega 3 and Co-Q10, Ginko Biloba and a good multi vitamin is what worked for me. These were critical and after a month of daily doses of these I was able to reduce my medication from every 8 hrs to every 12 hrs, then after 2 wks of that, to every 24 hrs, then after 2 wks of that, only when I needed it. I was off the meds and pleased, but I knew there was more I could do to improve my health.
To introduce you to my next discovery, I need to first point out that Im and electrical (control systems) engineer, grounded in the scientific method, where statistics and testing decide reality. Nonetheless, I had been to a few really good psychics and I wanted to investigate if there was any avenues in this direction that could help me heal further. Also, Western medicine is not the only successful method to heal on this planet, so as far as I was concerned the entire planets healing methods were fair game to investigate.
No Dr. can operate on or even find a chakra. So a psychic medical intuitive? Well, if they can tell you things that you know are true, but there is no way they can know through the normal 5 senses, then they (and) you are seeing a different part of reality that cant be proved by the scientific method.
I went to an intuitive healer see: http://www.intuitiveground.com/ . What is that? Check Lisas webpage. Read what you can find about Carolyn Myss. She has psychic abilities that focus mainly on health issues and can scan your body, see whats going on with your chakras and tell you whats bothering you. Both Lisa and Carolyn are intuitive healers. Some can heal you outright, some tell you what they see, do a partial healing (as some problems need a lot of sessions) and tell you what you need to do. Also to find out more, read the book: 14 Spiritual Healers. This seemed way out there fruit loops and wind chimes to me at first, but I found out with persistence they do have a handle on a side of the universe that many are blind to.
What they turned up is that I had developed a wheat allergy. This happening at 50+ years, developing this strange allergy was a huge surprise, something my cardiologist nor the Dr. who was offering ablation had not heard of, but is true none the less. What the mechanism that is triggered is that the adrenal glands over react to the wheat gluten and produce way too much adrenalin and that causes the heart to change its rhythm. Other things such as alcohol do this too as does caffeine and other foods containing sulfites. That is why niacin, a Vit. B which helps support adrenal function, is a huge help. I think Dr. Hoffer also recommends a good B complex as well, which is what I do. Again, supporting adrenal functions. Check into adrenal fatigue, you will find lots of the population has it after years of stress from work, relationships and so on. Dietary experimentation is a must as well as observation on what you have ingested prior to an episode. Usually I will be affected about 1.5 to 2.5 hrs after eating.
Furthering the work (more visits with medical intuitive and reading everything I could find like Barbara Ann Brennans Hands of Light), I have since found out that our auras exist and are tied to our nervous system in a similar manner as to our blood circulation and tissue (body). Our chakras and organs have counterparts in the auras that hold past emotions that do eventually manifest back in our body as we age if we dont deal with them. Heartaches and upsets from even your childhood can still be there which was the case with me. The medical intuitive I found directed me to an intuitive councilor who worked with me to purge old, old hurts over 5 or 6 sessions, the intuitive also told me about Body Talk. I found a Body Talk practitioner and have been to her about 10 times and she does the balancing within the organs and actually has had the most beneficial effect. Now I can eat a piece of pie and the crust does not bother me, a slice of cake once in a while and even the bottom part of a bun when I have a hamburger.
It was quite an adjustment in my rigid scientific thinking to give the psychics, spirit world and intuitive healers a chance, but the results are astounding, so I know my awareness of this dimension of reality is fact and I am richer for having gone through the experience.
I still have a pill in my wallet in case I push my luck too far, like having too many Red Lobster biscuits with beer and seafood, (I still have some psychic work to finish) but Im going the path to do so. My overall health has also increased. Im also 56 now, also have resumed daily Tai Chi too.
One more thing to note, I also tried what was suggested to me by going on a strict diet, completely eliminating wheat.
That was a surprise and a big adjustment for me as I used to eat toast in the morning, sandwiches for lunch and often have pasta for dinner, with garlic bread. I went on a South Beach diet, in a sense, severely reducing my carbs and increasing protein from fish and protein shakes and so on. Im not really overweight, being 6 ft at 195 lbs, however I did drop 10 lbs right away and felt generally better as a result.
So, Im off the meds, except having a pill in my pocket in case I push my allergies, but my life style is normal, I ski, bike, do Tai Chi, lift weights and am looking forward to living to 110 completely healthy and sane (I think ;), learning and enjoying life).
Hope this helps, folks. If anyone wants a copy of Dr. Hoffers note on vitamins, Ill gladly email it to you (doug.lanz@shaw.ca).

I hope you keep us posted as the years go by as your apporach will greatly increase in validity with time. You have found quite a reasonable (though somewhat unorthodox) solution. Conventional wisdom has us take poisons ( my cardiologists actually uses that word) or fries part of our Heart (ablation). Hence your approach is much more reasonable than that. GOod luck and keep us posted.
I was already taking Vit E (mixed tocopherals) 400 IU which thins the blood a little and ginko biloba for my ocular migrains. Ginko has the wonderful property of dialating the tiniest of the capillaries in the brain so it did not seem to me that further blood thinning would be of benefit. Nonetheless, I had the cardiologist and my general practitioner STRONGLY recommend at least the baby asprin, 81 mg every day. Piles and piles of studies do support the anti coagulant properties of asprin - plus other benefits, so about 4 months ago I began to add that to my morning vitamin mix. By the way, the Body Talk sessions I have about twice a month are having a huge effect, so much so that I can now have whole wheat pita's 3 to 4 times a week and the odd butter tart, without problems so my wheat intolerance is subsiding. Having said that, though, a friend made some nice orange white cake 2 wks ago- I had a big slice to try out and 3 hrs later I had afib and needed to take a propafenone to stop it. So I'm going 3 steps forward, 1 step backwards, then forwards again. I'm not totally healed yet, still have the "pill in pocket", but I am determined to heal myself no matter what healing modality I need to investigate.
