Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Hello everyone. After my computer went down, I finally got a new one and found my way back to you. I don't know if you remember me. I went by the name of marymom4. I've missed you all, and hope you are doing well.
I need your support and advice now more than ever.
To give you a little history, I was diagnosed with afib 2 years ago. In those 2 years I have had episodes of afib 5 times with the last 2 being in the past seven days. When I saw my cardiologist last year he said I'm on the low end of it. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a connection between acid reflux, gas and afib. With me these things go hand in hand. I am on metoprolol 50mg. twice daily, and warfarin 5mg. once a day. I started getting pvcs or pacs the past four nights when I would lye down. Up to this point the meds were controlling my heart kerplops (as I like to call them), but after eating at a relatives on Memorial day, I experienced some reflux and the kerplops started, but only in the evening. I also had an episode of afib that night which only lasted an hour. It doesn't matter if I lay on my side or my back. They happen about every on to three beats and last for about an hour. Then subside. Last night I didn't get any and was able to fall asleeep. Then at four in the morning I awoke to afib. I wasn't due to take my metoprolol until 9 am. so I toughed it out. After taking it, the afib went away an hour later. Now I am going through anxiety thinking that every night when I go to bed I will go into afib. I'm even considering sleeping in a chair.
I called my cardiologist and cannot get in to see him until the 20th. of this month. He told me last year, if I go into afib I can take an extra metoprolol, but since my bp was low 107/75, I was afraid to.
I guess what I'm looking for is reassurance. The thing that scares me is that I don't want this afib thing to become more frequent. Is it possible for a person to many years without it becoming worse? I've done so good for the past two years. I'm wondering if an increase in meds will help. Can anyone else relate to this? I don't want to become a prisoner to this annoying afib. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It does not sound like you go in anywhere near as frquently as I do so maybe that is something to be thankful for. As far as knowing if it will progress that is not something I can say but I am expecting mine to and am already considering an ablation. I am a 40 year old male if that makes any difference.
