Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
I had a totally different experience tonight. I have paroxsymal a fib. The last episode I had was about a year ago, thanks to flecainide. I just saw the EP a few weeks ago and my EKG was great, I did a 14 day monitor which was also completely normal. Now....I just got up to go to the bathroom and when I got back into bed my heart felt like it did a flip-flop and then took off into a very rapid heart rate. I felt OK, maybe a little breathless, but that might have been anxiety. Anyway, I got my stethascope out and I had a completely regular heart rate, no skipping or anything...just plugging along at about 120. Normally my heart rate is between 60-70 with the meds I take. I took some ativan because now I was feeling very anxious, and tried to do some relaxation breathing. After about 2 hours things gradually slowed down and I am back to a heart rate of 70-80. I was just about to make my husband get up and take a trip to ER when it started to slow down.
I'm not quite sure what to make of this.....was this an anxiety attack?
I'm sure I was in NSR, it was totally regular just fast.
Could the flecainide have triggered an episode of tachycardia?
Oh....and I took my fist dose of xarelto last night...only thing different???

Went to the Cleveland Clinic in early December and the report I received, diagnosed it as atypical left sided flutter. According to my new EP, he sees a lot of cases of flutter after an ablation.
I don't know if this was helpful, because my episodes came out of no where and I did not take any meds at that time. I hope you only experienced an isolated case of SVT or flutter. Wishing you all the best for the new year.

Stress associated with Christmas and a new year.
Unconscious anxiety associated with taking a different anticoagulant.
Possibly something differnt in your diet at Christmas.

I considered taking an extra 1/2 of flecainide which is my plan for an episode of a fib. But this really didn't feel like a fib so I hesitated and didn't take it. I don't think I was anxious until it started...I don't think it was an anxiety attack. SVT, maybe flutter. I'm hoping it was an isolated incident.

The Holidays are always stressful. Interestingly, the last episode of a fib I had was a year ago on Christmas Eve. No alcohol involved, but lots of sugar!
This threw me because it was different....didn't feel like the fish-flopping irregular heart of a fib.
And I definitely have some anxiety about the xarelto. I don't think it was an anxiety attack, but some sort of tachy episode...I'm not sure what the cause. I'm going to see if it happens again.
The mind is so funny....While your heart is racing, skipping, flip-flopping it seems like a very dire situation. As soon as it stops and is in wonderful NSR again, all is right with the world. We often feel it will never happen again. So right now.....no worries.
I did read that being on strong heart medications for a long time can result in a fast heart rate when you come off them. Has anyone else read anything about this?
