After stop taking Atenolol, your heart rate might go up just a little bit. But, since you are taking such a low dose, I don't think you will see or feel much difference. I am just curious about your heart rate after the ablation and now since you have been taking the Atenolol. What was it before and what is it now?

My heart rate after the ablation was in low 90s. At times would go to upper 90s which is very uncomfortable. So, I take 25 mg of Atenolol if I feel my heart rate is up and bothering me. But, I do NOT take Atenolol on daily basis. Usually, my heart rate goes up if I eat my old triggers (cheese, butter, nuts, etc) but I do not go into afib unless I really overdose on my old triggers. Just my experience.

By the way, 25 mg of Atenolol brings down my heart rate from 90s to low 80s.

I've weaned off metoprolol several times. My usual dose was 12.5 mg daily, and my EP tapered me down with a once daily 12.5 mg or a week. I didn't notice anything.

I took Atenolol for HBP yrs. ago. I stopped taking it one day and started taking Lisinopril the next....no problem.

I take Metoprolol as PIP. I can tell when it is out of my system, I get my energy back.

Thanks everybody for your responses. Scott, my 'old' resting heart rate was about 70bpm. After a bad afib episode, I started taking atenolol and my resting rate went down to about 62bpm. Also, when I went on the elliptical machine at the gym, the same effort that would give me about 128bpm went to 110 on atenolol.
After my ablation, my heart rate was weird for several weeks. I was still on the 12.5 mg atenolol. After 3 weeks I was tested and my resting rate was 80 while on atenolol. So higher than before the ablation, but entirely in the normal range.

I think that my resting rate is lower now, but I haven't checked. I'm guessing that if I go off atenolol it will be higher than before the ablation. I don't know what to think about this. Most people say that the rate gradually goes down.

someone told me that what is repairing in my heart is a nerve, not the muscle, and that this takes time. I'm not even sure if this is true. any comments?

I've been on atenolol for so long I forget what I felt like before. I'm curious if my energy will be better. I hope so. but the side effects don't seem to be much of anything.

Good post and series of responses. I often wonder if I were to bail on metoprolol entirely. My EP wanted me to do so several years ago. When I did a few days later I had a severe attack. Hence, I still take it. 25mg 2x daily. Voodoo med.s or legit stuff? Everyone is different and seeing some of the wicked low does in these few replies it's pretty interesting. My EP told me 50 a day was wicked low in hos opinion,.....

About a month ago I switched to the reg. metoprolol. I had been taking the extended release version which is 4X the cost of the reg. stuff. Fortunately, thus far I have'nt noticed any difference in the two versions.

I take 25 mg of metropopol 2 x per day, for about 2-3 years, it has been doing a very good job for me, my bp stays the same all the time. I was on Linispril and Atenolol for awhile and I did not like either, so now I am off of both and the Metropopol is doing what they both were trying to, I am happy.

It's a good idea to check your blood pressure in the weeks after discontinuing a beta blocker. These medications have a tendency to suppress blood pressure and once stopped blood pressure can rise to where it would have been without the drug. Just a heads up in case you have a family history of hypertension.
