Went to see my cardiologist today...Dr. Calkins said I should go at least once a year for an EKG and see if there are any signs of the return of...well, you know, THE ENEMY. My ablation was 2 January 2013. My cardiologist said that I can really start to relax now..he said the vast majority of ablations fail within the first 6 months (of course I mean, IF they are going to fail), and that the first year requires a close monitoring, but he said that after two years, the afib should NOT return. He used the word "cured," but of course Dr. Calkins himself does not use that word, so I think he perhaps just meant to say that PERHAPS the monster will never return since I made it this far. This is such a far cry from my first cardiologist, a young guy who said "The LAST thing you want to do is get an ablation...I have sent three patients for an ablation, and one of them died. How do those odds sound to you?" In hindsight I should have just said "I will NOT be using any EP that YOU recommend!" And I found my EP online. In any case, I am very happy this day..and will no longer give afib any thought whatsoever....well, until my next heart palpitations, which could be in the next 10 minutes....
