Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

The day finally arrived! My first PT test and weigh in since I went into afib in July of 2012. And I learned once again the hard lesson that no matter how much you do the recumbent bike and the elliptical, it isn't the same as pounding the pavement. I did the 18 push ups and 28 sit ups no problem, but the 2.5 mile walk damn near killed me. I did it in 36 minutes, so I passed, but I feel like crap! Trying to get out of bed tomorrow and Monday won't be pretty, but I already have a massage scheduled for Monday!
Of course I was VERY worried about going back into afib, but so far, so good. I am sure those among you who have been ablated may have had the same experience, the first time you really try and push it physically.
And I made weight (220, max is 226)...so yeah on that.
As for the metabolic syndrome, I may have told a few of you that 6 months of doing that bike and elliptical brought everything into line. My triglycerides were 146, and my blood sugar was 89. The good cholesterol HDL went from 26 to 34, which is still bad. But I am really proud of the blood sugar thing..I haven't been under 105 in 10 years, and with the statin drugs it was up to 114 and climbing, when I started this workout routine. Now the medical folks among you will have to tell me...is metabolic syndrome like afib? You had it, you got it? So I will have to continue to watch those numbers? Just wondering, but I think I know the answer.
Anyway, gotta shower and get back to drill, but just wanted to share the good news. It will be BETTER news if I make it through the weekend!

No, I am at the 15 month mark now. While I am THRILLED to have done so well, today has been a rough one...borderline tachycardia for about 4 hours after the test (103 the highest, about a half hour after the test). Now my pulse is FINALLY starting to come down (81). I cannot wait to get home and just get to bed. Makes me feel really out of shape, when I read the people on here that can RUN 10 miles in an hour, and all I did was walk 2.5! But I bet those folks couldn't sit on the couch and watch back to back Hallmark movies like I can!

Metabolic syndrome? Yes, you will have to continue to watch those numbers. Keeping weight down and exercise can control it, but if you slack on that the numbers will start creeping up again.

I certainly hope that you feel better soon. Massages are wonderful things! And I somehow did survive the weekend...final formation will be in about 45 minutes, and I am going to try and sprint home to watch the 5PM Hallmark movie! Those always put me in a good mood. Massage for the mind. Then tomorrow, the real thing! Hope you feel well enough in the next few days to get that massage!
