I use a saline nose spray called Ocean and it works wonders for congestion as I use a c pap at night and any congestion makes breathing hard. For the cough 1 oz of whiskey and 1 oz of honey--mix well and drink slowly ---repeat as needed. Then of course if alcohol is a trigger you are out of luck. NSR to all Rick

Chicken soup, saline nasal spray, lemon juice and honey for throat, warm baths... ask your Dr about fever reduction meds that are ok (tylenol/aspirin).

Thanks for the suggestions Rick and petey!! I'm pre-daibetic, so have to stay away from honey. I do take those sugar free honey cough drops. Been hydrating. Guess gotta let it take it's course.

I've used Coricidin HPB for cold and cough - it seems to alleviate some symptoms, and it hasn't triggered afib for me. It's designed for folks with high blood pressure - a pharmacist told me it's okay with afib. Also Mucinex works if it's a bad cough. I surely miss Nyquil......

Petey's advice is spot on. Try to avoid the decongestants, they are stimulants and could trigger an episode. Plain Mucinex or Robitussin cough syrup isn't likely to be a problem unless you are on coumadin. They can increase your INR.

You are right to avoid the honey in your case. Warm salt-water gargle can also help for sore throats.

And don't forget my Mom's favorite....the Vicks Vaporub on chest. Cover with a nice flannel rag!

I like everyones comments and have often used the Vicks to the neck with a sock , I am a huge fan of Coricidin HBP, I dont have HBP but there are no stimulants in it....and I take the liquid....and while its not Nyquil I sleep like a baby and it helps a lot , so that is another endorsement for Coricidin....

I am able to find the Coricidin at the Local drugstores but they are often out of it....however, if you look under Health and Drugs on Amazon.com they also sell it at a reasonable price and you dont pay taxes or delivery most of the time.
