Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

Just thought I'd update everyone on things after my ablation and post a little happy report. It will be 3 months since my ablation this coming week and the blanking period will be officially over. I'm happy to report that I have had no episodes at all and my EP has taken me off both Pradaxa and Multaq. I'm now only taking 12.5mg of Metoprolol and a baby aspirin. I'll be wearing a 2-week monitor in a couple of months to see how I'm doing. Not sure if all seems well then if they'll keep me on the meds. I was told that if all was well at the 1 year mark they will consider the ablation a complete success and I will "graduate". I remain positive and hopeful.

Just a few words for those of you considering an ablation...
I was apprehensive and afraid about the ablation but, as I've posted before, it was not a big deal at all. And if it ends up putting this afib in its place, even if just for a few years, it was well worth it.

Yay! I'm more or less tracking your experience, but about a month behind. I've also been taking 12.5 mg of a beta blocker; hoping to eventually come of it but we'll see. It's not bad. Have you been exercising at all in a way that gets your hr up? I did my first nature walk today since the ablation that involved a 700 foot climb; no big deal but it was the most taxing exercise in two months.

Thanks for your update! I'm scheduled for my ablation this upcoming Wednesday, 4/29/15. It's postings like yours (including the people I've PM'd) that give me hope and help reduce my anxiety about the procedure. Continued NSR!!!

Hegel - yes. I've been going to the gym 3-4 days/week and do 30 minutes on an elliptical machine. Can never seem to get my heart rate passed 130. So even at 12.5mg, the Metoprolol is doing its job.

Yeah, I started on 12.5 about 2 months before my ablation. The same elliptical regime that would get me to 128 or so bpm then resulted in about 110 bpm. (that is, the same resistance and foot speed.)

I find that my heart might get a little wonky still after aerobic exercise, post ablation (two months). I've been on an upward curve; I hope that this will continue and I can continue on my old exercise regime, swimming plus backpacking, etc. It's not possible yet.

Glad to hear everything went great for. In a couple of weeks my EP is going to be taking me off of Multaq. Did you have any withdrawal symptoms when you stopped it? I've been on it since July 2013 after my 2nd ablation and I'd a little nervous about what will happen when I am off it. When I was taken off of solalol I had withdrawal symptoms. I had internal shakes. Thanks for your info.

TalentedOne - I was only on Multaq for 2 months so I'm not sure if you're experience coming off of it will be different. But I had no symptoms of any kind.
