Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

Afib --> Anxiety --> No Sleep

Hey y'all. It's 230am again. Afib. Restless. In case this happens to you, just wanted to let you know you're not alone. This heart rhythm disorder can be madness at times. I've had to 'make nice' with the wee hours of the night. I'm trying my best to take cary of myself, but with a-fib, it can be so baffling. I wouldn't be surprised if 5 or ten years from now, doctors are laughing at the barbaric intervention methods that are currently employed, just as we look back at the madness of an open heart Cox Maze surgery. But clearly it wasn't madness. It was the beginning of a new technology that paved way for less invasive techniques, albeit not as successful, but much less invasive and much more safe. Maybe this is just my 230am rant with some passive aggressive gratitude. Sleep well, Sean

I hope things settle down for you Bro. Unlikely, things will change drastically anytime soon via the medical community. In the mean time we are left to carry on. Some have a more challenging task at hand than others. All the best and NSR to all. - Tom

Sean, so sorry to hear that, I've been in the same boat a couple of times myself and it is really crazy making. The next day I'm so tired out I had to call in to work the last time it happened. I did find that sitting up made it better than lying down for me, but the demon has a mind of its own.

I don't know how much research is being done, but I'm sure hoping they will find a way to fix this monster once and for all. Peace and better NSR days ahead.

Sucks. Had that night last night.... afib in the late afternoon/early evening but fell asleep around 11:30. woke up at 3:30 and of course starting thinking about the afib and that was it !!

I was thinking about taking Melatonin at night..... but i read that it interacts with some of the blood thinners. Have you ever tried it?

Anxiety, don't you love it. Tomorrow I get my dental implant (finally the screw goes in the jawbone). I think I'm more anxious about cutting down my Coumadin for the procedure, than the procedure itself. So, I took a Xanax this morning, and probably one tonight and one tomorrow morning. Being stoned for the dentist is the only way to go. Of course, I'll take some extra metoprolol to keep the big A under control for my dental visit.

Paul - was really counting on you to find some old Italian remedy (preferrbly wine or pasta based) while you were on vcation.... ha !!

Actually I had stopped taking the Xanax while I was in Italy, and have been Xanax free for about a month. However, my dentist fear is now shaking its head. In addition, I'm waiting for the endocrinologists report on my thyroid that seams to have gone out of wack recently. Perhaps that can explain my recent reoccurrence of AFIB. I'll start another thread on the thyroid thing when I get the test results in a few days. Can we say anxiety ?

Meanwhile, starting tomorrow, no solid food for a few days as my implant heals, and no wine with all the antibiotics. I hope no other teeth ever need this kind of work ...and the co$ts ... ouch!

Good luck at the dentist, I'm next in line for implant. If you need the Xanax, why not take it. I'm thinking of asking my doc for
some because this diagnosis has made my anxiety all out of bounds.
You're allowed to drink wine with coumadin? When I had my hip replacement I was on it and they said NO alcohol. Nice that things have changed for the better.
Just think how nice that new tooth is going to feel!!!
