I had my ablation 12/13 and decided to wait until spring 2015 for my colonoscopy. I turned 50 in May

I have one coming up in Dec. I plan to hydrate and cut back on solids for a day or 2 before prep.

I also will make certain the anesthetist knows I am super sensitive to stimulating meds.

I am hoping not to stress about it. If I go into afib, hopefully it will not be the month long off and on episode.

Hi yoga cat, Chris had pretty light sedation. He woke right up after. I had him drink coconut water the days leading up and during the prep he was hungry, but he drank a lot of fluids until 6 hours preprocedure. The procedure according to Chris was really easy the hardest part was not being able to eat solids for a day and a half. Good luck to you on your upcoming procedure. I'm sure it will go smoothly:)

I was given the prep solution that is not supposed to deplete your electrolytes and did not have any issues I was also told to eat lots of berries and foods with mag for at least week before the prep. I do that anyway so that was easy.

I was just diagnosed with Afib..my first episode came the day after a colonoscopy. I ended up in the ER with 4 hours of crazy heart rhythms. I'm on a heart monitor and meds right now. I'll find out in a couple of weeks what's going on. Good luck to everyone :)

More of a question : after 3 cardioversions and lots of flecainide I have been 99.9% fib free for over a year. Due for colonoscopy this year and am very leery of going back into a fib, and of course nervous about the xarelto. Any comments, experiences, words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I actually went in to a colonoscopy with a-fib, and the propofol converted me =)

What did the Doctor's say about the Propafol converting your a-fib? This is what happened to me when I was going to have a. Cardioversion in March of 2013. They didn't have to do it because the propofol relaxed me and converted me. I truly believe that stress is a big trigger for me! Happy NSR everyone and have a great week.

So clearly the propofol-stress hypothesis is one hypothesis. Similar to the benzo hypothesis for cardioversion (Klonopin converts me half the time -- a nice back up before scheduling a cardioversion). But the fact is so little is known about how a-fib is caused. We know common triggers, but we don't know yet what the fundamental biological mechanisms of that errant electrical activity is. And it is likely different in different types of a-fib, and it's all treated the same, which is the current state of a-fib treatment, which could very well change over coming years as diagnostic technology becomes more and more precise.

My hypothesis is that propofol has some direct anti-arrhythmic activity, much like benzos. But you'll have a hard time convincing anyone to study it because their patent lives have expired.
