Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

I classify my afib events into mild, moderate and severe. (note: other than what is described below, I am strong and healthy). 25 mg metoprol daily.

Mild: I feel it, maybe a little short of breath, no other symtoms. About 2-4 per week. Lasts about 15 minutes

Moderate: I really feel it, definately short of breath, lasts 1/2 - 2 hrs. Followed by frequent urination, 7-10 times in the following 2-3 hrs. Occurs once or twice a month.

Severe : Must lay down. Need to urinate, but hard to reach bathroom (too weak). Lasts over 1 hour, fortunately, occurs less than once per year.

I have read that the frequent urination associated with afib is caused by the heart producing a homone that tells the kidneys to dump lots of fuild.

Does anyone else have experience with frequent urination associated with afib, or could shead some light on it?

Yes, when I am in afib, I definitely experienced this effect. My cardiologist told me that it is definitely on of the side effects.

Oh yes! I had forgotten that unpleasant side effect that accompanied my afib. I don't miss any of it! Been almost three years since my successful ablation.

I almost always go into Afib after retiring. I sleep thru it but probably wake up to urinate more frequently. I weigh myself daily on rising and if in Afib I find have a 1-2# water loss. I'm back to my normal weight once out of afib. Warfarin is the only medication I take.

I do have to urinate more at night, but I never associated that with AF before.

I tend to have AF right before I try to sleep and when I wake up. Does anyone else have this pattern also?

I have that problem too. My dr. said this is a common symptom. I also have most of my symptoms in the PM.

I just got on this Site tonight,,,,,and was curious about something,,,,back in January 2007......I woke up and between my chest and my waist, I felt like that entire area was vibrating,,,,,,and I noticed I had to go pee........once I did the vibration went away....this went on several times over the next couple years,,,,,but when I mentioned it to any Dr, they looked at me like I was 'Speaking a foreign lanuage (they had no answer whatsoever for it ) then in August 2009 I had my 'first' A Fib attack,,,,,,,,and the vibration has became more frequent, every since.........and it wakes me up 3 to 4 times a night, 'again' once I go pee, the vibration stops,,,,does anyone else have this type of vibration?......and be nice:)

I took a diuretic for about two years (hydrocortotyizide). It was screwing up my kidneys, so the doc took me off.
