Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Cardioversion - is any process that aims to convert an arrhythmia back to sinus rhythm. Electrical cardioversion is used when the patient has a pulse but is either unstable, or chemical cardioversion has failed or is unlikely to be successful. These scenarios may be associated with chest pain, pulmonary oedema, syncope or hypotension. It is also used in less urgent cases, e.g. atrial fibrillation (AF) to try to revert the rhythm back to sinus.
Cardioversion and defibrillation procedures both use a device to deliver an electrical shock to the heart.
Electrical cardioversion uses much lower electricity levels to give the shock than defibrillation. Defibrillation is often used to treat much more difficult to convert arrhythmias.
