Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

I have been taking warfarin now for 5 months with no problem until this week. I had bowel movement with blood. Went to cardio Dr and he wants me to colonoscopy. Told me not to take Warfarin that night and the next day had diarrhea with no blood showing. This morning I had bright red blood in urine. Does this mean I should go to ER or wait till I can see Dr on Monday? It is Sat. now. Has anyone had an experience like this?

So sorry you are experiencing this. I believe you should head to ER, as they will probably get a genito- urinary Dr. involved. They are the ones that deal with blood in urine issues. Wishing you all the best going forward.

Hi kcarr1313,

Just curious if your doctor or anybody else has checked your blood to see how THIN it is before jumping to any conclusion? To me, a blood test to check your INR is the first thing before doing anything else. I hope your cardio doctor has done that already before sending you for a colonoscopy. But, knowing doctors in general, I doubt he first checked your INR.

If your blood is too thin (INR off the chart), anything can happen. Since you are taking Coumadin, if your blood is too thin, they can give you vitamin K1 to remedy the problem and make your blood thicker.

I hope the problem is caused by an overdose of Coumadin and it is nothing serious. I wish you luck and I suggest first check your INR rather than worrying about anything else.

I am sure if you go to ER, that would be the first thing that they will do.

So, what's the story. Blood in stool and urine while on Warfarin is not a good thing. Go to the ER immediately. Let us know the results.

I am sorry about not getting back to everyone and appreciate your concerns. The Dr. had me come in to draw blood to check my hemoglobin and something else. My INR was in therapeutic range. After talking to the Dr. he suggested I see a gastroenterologist and recommended one. I am waiting for an appt. This all cleared up within two days so I don't know what is going on. The nurse seemed to think I could have internal hemorroids.

Hemorrhoids would not put blood in your urine. Keep digging.
