Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

What next? Diabetes is what was next. They just composed my 3-mo-blood sugar testings, and I have to go on Metformin for elevated blood sugars. I Thank God it isn't insulin though. I've been feeling nauseated and my skin clammy, and not able to figure out what's causing it. My EKG and echo are good, so it's not my heart for sure. Today, my PCP calls and tells me I'm feeling this way, because of the high elevation of blood sugar. The good part is I now know what's wrong. The bad part is I'll be on Metformin and possibly at some point have to take insulin.

God has his plans. I think he allowed the A-fib to be cured, because he had a little more to put on my plate:) I have enojoyed about 8 mo though, and forgotten what it really felt like to feel good. I guess it's not to be though. I keep telling myself it could have been something so much worse though. I also have gout right now....and the pain in my toes is excruciating, but the meds I'm taking should clear it up.

I think deep down that the meds I tried for the atrial fib could easily have caused some of these problems, but no one really has the answer. I was on sotolol for quite awhile...so who knows?

I hope you are all doing well (Carol, I'm thinking of you a lot and wondering when you ablation is). I'm hoping for A-fib free days for all of you, and I think of you all often.

So sorry you have more to deal with. Diabetes means some lifestyle changes but most of us need to do that anyway. The good thing about diabetes is that you can control it.
Gout however sounds like it really sucks!
Take care and show those blood sugars who's the boss.

So sorry to hear about your diabetes problems. I'm pre-diabetic, so I can relate. Hope the metformin does the trick and insulin is not in your future.

When I was in the hospital for the a fib, I was also on prednisone which made my blood sugar shoot up. So, then I had to go on insulin. Didn't like that at all!!!

Dee- I am sorry to hear about the diabetes but am really glad that it has been diagnosed. It is so hard on the body if not managed. I hope the Metformin works out. Take care and know that we are are all thinking of you!

I have read and heard many times that cherry juice is good for gout..but I am sure it is NOT good for the blood sugar! When I went in for my ablation in January, my blood sugar was also elevated..and I wondered if this was a side effect of the metoprolol and/or flecanide. Recently gaining weight on top of that...so BAD! I certainly hope that this does not turn into full blown diabetes...NSR to you! Others can chime in on the cherry juice idea for the gout.

Beta-blockers, such as metoprolol, can occasionally cause hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Beta-blockers can also mask signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) such as increased heart rate and tremors. If you have experienced changes in your blood glucose levels, notify your physician. Keeping your blood glucose levels within the normal range will help you feel better and prevent the long-term complications of diabetes.

Hi Dee,

When one door closes another door opens. Attached is a Life Extension article on some of the anti cancer benefits of Metformin. Perhaps God's plan is to prevent cancer. Just a thought - but we never know what the universe holds for us in this lifetime.

Dee, I am wishin this was April fools day still, and you could tell us you are just fooling us, but alas, I know this is April 3rd. My Heart is sad to read this, as I read it over and over....I am devastated by this diagnosis. Hopefully the Metformin will make a positive difference.

My ablation is on hold till I talk to new EP on the 22nd. I am on day 17 NSR today.
