Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.
Whenever I try to sing it feels like I can't get enough air in or out. I shortly end up out of breath and have to stop. It's been like this for a few years now. Does anyone else have this happen?

I usually have it happen if my asthma is doing poorly as it's hard to breath in deep due to the spasms of the lungs (I don't know if that's the right word-bronchospasm, but it's when the whole lung field or chest is going in and out uncontrollably). Sometimes it's not bronchospasms, but just hard to get air in and out enough to sing, normally my breathing feels like I'm trying to move through a room that has tons of moving boxes everywhere and it takes a lot of energy to breath and I get tired and want to lay down. Normally when it happens I'm in my car trying to sing to a song and there's diesel fumes around. Anyway, in my case, once they treat the asthma it gets better...especially after a round of prednisone. Don't know what's causing it in your case, though.

I think it might be because I live around my asthma. They are both outdoors and indoors. Even taking singulair my lungs may still be aggravated. I also take reactine, ventolin and symbicort.

may or may not be asthma related. When my daughter was a teen she was having issues like you and took her to a pulmonary specialist. He determined she had vocal cord dysfunction. I don't remember much about it other than it is basically the opposite of asthma. she is doing well and sings & performs now with no problems. I hope you find answers and get relief. good luck.

Tanks debkay27! My ENT was never able to explain my chronic hoarseness. I've had it over two years. He said that my vocal cords came together normally with no polyps. Maybe my asthma and hoarseness are related.

Sometimes the hoarseness I get is due to the medicines, even if I rinse after the inhaled corticosteroids. I find the nebulizer, prednisone, and antibiotics also cause hoarseness. I reread my previous entry and released it was poorly worded (I'm a horrible writer-sorry). What I was trying to say is that yes, sometimes I have trouble singing. However, I find it's usually because I'm in the car on the freeway and being exposed to a lot of diesel fumes from the trucks. So, it's more that I'm having an asthma attack from the diesel fumes.

I love to sing..but I can't very much anymore because of my Asthma. I have also been told I have vocalcord disfunction....she told me to say EEEEEEEEE for acouple of min at a time, this helps open your cord up....when i try and sing in church, I do for a while untill I run out of air then I just hum....hope you get better.
