Asthma Support Group
Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.
hello,
first for some background:
i didn't develop asthma symptoms until college ( currently going into my senior year now). It started out as just being a little hard to breath when it was humid and I working out (3 years Ago). Since then it has grown worse. I never had an asthma attack. But I get very bad exercise induced asthma now. I even just have trouble walking around outside sometimes when it's humid.( I live in Missouri so it gets pretty bad here).i am now 21 and I use a daily inhaler now and also the albuterol rescue inhaler.
I have always ways been very active and fit. I started doing crossfit last August and have been on and off with it ever since. I love crossfit, I love throwing weight around and feeling like I'm improving and that girls can lift too! But I'm always so afraid that the people at my gym judge me when I have to stop and use my inhaler. Or when I have to take breaks or can't push myself as hard as some other members. I hate it so much...
I am in fairly good shape but my lungs are holding me back. I've been so frustrated with feeling this way that yesterday I ignored what my body was telling me and went harder than I ever had. after the workout I layed on the ground and no matter what I did for some reason I couldn't recover. Usually when I work out after words sucks and it takes me longer to recover than everyone else... But it never felt like this.
Well ill my arms and legs started to tingle and feel numb and my hands began to slowly curl up and they became stuck curled up, but I figured it was just because I worked on grip strength.I didn't want to seem like I was over reacting so I just tried to quietly tell my boyfriend who is an avid crossfitter that I needed to go home and rest because I didn't feel right and I didn't want to drive. When we got in the car my hands began to curl to the point that it hurt because they kept trying to curl even when they had gone as far as they could. I couldn't really breath or talk and I threw up. So we went to the ER
While I was in the waiting room my breathing because even worse. My fingernails were purple and my hands were pale. When my boyfriend told the receptionist that my breathing was getting worse. She said she could do anything until I passed out.
* rant*
that made me so mad, you really would wait until my brain was so low on oxygen that it started to shut down before you would move me up the list?!
*end rant*
after I was finally seen by the doctor they determined it was a bronchospasm and gave me a treatment of a high albuterol dose, it was like a vaporizer with medicine.
But I had never even heard of a bronchospasm. She said my body was low on CO2 and that's why my body began to act so strange; going numb, muscles contracting, throwing up, poor motor function.
I was given a dose of steroids for the next 4 days,
( 10 mg prednisone, 5 pills a day)
HOWEVER that night when I got home my hands and feet began to tingle again. And at one point my hands began to curl just barely though. I was really struggling to breathe again. But after about an hour it went away again.
but today ( the day after the bronchospasm) even though I have taken the steroids and am just resting. My hands are still getting shaky and my lungs still feel extremely constricted. My jaw feels sore as well.
Does anyone have any advice for me? Or has anyone had this before? Does anyone else also struggle a lot with exercise induced asthma who is trying to get into better shape/ raise their confidence?
Any input would be greatly appreciated because I dont know anyone who has ever had bronchospasm a or struggled as bad as I do while working out...
