Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.

I have cough variant asthma. When I have a flare up I cough so hard that I see spots. On two occasions, however, I have actually blacked out briefly. It happened again today at the pulmonologist's office. I was in the examination room being interviewed by a nurse and I began to cough. Next thing I'm aware of is the nurse asking
me what is going on. I was disoriented and was thinking "who is this person and why is she talkng to me?" I took me a few moments until I knew where I was and what I was doing. I was still rubber legged for a few minutes so they monitored me until I was back from la-la land.
the doctor thought I might have an airway that collapses for some reason. He said we will monitor things but that I might have to have a stent put in the airway at some point.
Does anyone else suffer from black outs. If so, did they have to get a stent

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Could be pulmonary/airway collapse, could also be cardiac irregularity/arrythmia or blockage.
Bottomline: get a stress test done immediately. This will be able to determine if this pulmonary or cardiac and determine a course of action.
Please post what happens.
I already have had a stress test a couple of weeks ago that was OK. I was given the test to check my pulse rate because I was taken off of one of my BP meds and the other was changed. (my old BP meds were suspected of aggravating my asthma symptoms)
the cardiologist said the heart was OK and my problems with stamina were asthma related.
I feel great today. Next month I see the asthma specialist at the lung center and he and the pulmonologist are supposed to confer. We shall see.
Glad to hear a recent stress test was already done. After hearing what you've been through I'd suspect the change in BP meds and the black out episode might be related. Do you get titration tests for drug levels? Might want to look into this. At any rate, I'm glad the two doctors are going to consult with one another.

docs run test and come up empty. i think it was laack of oxegen.
i have been diagnosed with cough variant asthma and i blacked out last month during a particularly nasty fit of coughing just after going to bed. i was actually lying flat and didn't know one could pass out while lying flat or because of coughing! the first GP said there was some panic in there but the other GP in my practice said it was indeed known that people could cough that much that they pass out.
I used a lot of Ventolin and some Atrovent and slowly came at again but as I did I started hyperventilating. All very scary; however by the time the ambulance was here - some 40 minutes later - i was better again.
my doctors never mentioned a stent.
hope you are better now.
