Asthma Support Group
Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.

Earlier i felt out of breath and took two extra puffs of albuterol after having taken two puffs earlier in the day. I usually get a slight racing heart but it goes away quickly. I had a couple of sips of diet coke but not too much. Today, my heart rate went up to 115 and my blood pressure went up to 127/92. I had chest pain and tingling in my arm and hand. Eventually with relaxation and some water my heart rate and blood pressure are starting to go back down. Is it common to suddenly have this type of reaction to albuterol after never having it before? I have high blood pressure and take diltiazem and ramipril for it.

I"m not familiar with those drugs muself but have you checked with your pharmacist or dr?

I've never had problems with albuterol causing a racing heart for that long. I think it's due to high calcium caused by hyperparathyroidism. My family doctor has been out on maternity leave since December. The doctor replacing her isn't very helpful.

even ask your local pharmacy-they know about meds and their combo with other meds

I have had similar but not exactly the same reaction to albuterol. I don't know anything about the other drugs though. I would call the doctor or pharma next time. I have felt lightheaded and heard pounding for an hour once.It was scary. I do know that for other health reasons I have to cut my caffeine out, so maybe you can look at caffeine consumption? It's to where now if I drink a large at Starbucks I'll get heart pounding.

I have cut down some on drinking diet coke because used to drink way too much. I'm down to two cans a day sometimes one. I do drink an sugarless ice tea at the movie theater. It's just in a small bottle. I'm sorry you've had the same issues redvelvet.*hugs* I'll just have to keep an eye on my symptoms with albuterol. Albuterol really helps helps me as a rescue inhaler. I also take symbicort but have never had any trouble with it. The other times I had chest pain and racing heart it would come on without using albuterol or having had caffeine.

caffeine can affect people more than it does others

Yes I have had that before and it does go away but I would contact your Dr there are other options.

What's strange is I haven't had a problem since that episode and never had a problem with albuterol before. It has always worked for me. I wish I could call my doctor's office but it's closed until August 13th.

Sometimes when I use albuterol in my nebulizer it causes those kinds of reactions. It's very unsettling.

Try Xopinex. Similar to albuterol but without so many nasty side effects.
