Why didn't someone tell me

I have adult asperger's. I am 41 and I am the absolute poster child. I just got diagnosed recently and before that I had never even heard of it.my life could have been do different if I would have known. How can help get people help they needed while they are young so they do not live cursed like I have? I am using my podcast to help so join me there but there has to be other ways. Asperger's didn't even become a part of the diagnostic manual (the DSM) until 1995 (I think). It took a few years beyond that before people in the medical and education communities really picked up on it. So at that point you would have been about 25, and probably not in a situation where it would have been likely that it would have been noticed or diagnosed. It's still hard to get parents educated about these things, and to be proactive in getting an accurate diagnosis. In the US, the pharmacy industries tend to push the doctors towards diagnoses that can be medicated - like ADHD and Bipolar. And now that Asperger's is finally being recognized, they are talking about removing it from the next version fo the DSM and just lumping it under Autism. It's kooky.....

It's good you got your diagnosis. Now that you know what the problem is, you can start working on things that alleviate some of the fallout of Asperger's. I hope it helps you.
