Asperger syndrome - also referred to as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's, Aspergers or just AS - is one of five neurobiological pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and is characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills, normal to above normal intelligence, and standard language development.
I havemany, many of the books about Aspergers/Autism Spectrum but just started reading Anita A. Lesko's book: Asperger's Syndrome: When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Lemonade.
She was diagnosed at age 49 and is a nurse anethesist. It has been very painful for me to read as she talks about years of taunting, bullying and even some physical abuse. In spite of this, she is very encouraging and gives her thoughts and wants to help others, especially children.
I for the life of me, can't comprehend why some people are so mean, just because they can be, to people who they perceive differently. I am not talking about low lifes, people who are sociopathic, etc. I am talking about everyday supposedly Christian people; people who are in the helping profession--therapists, just being mean because they can......
I am 53 and didn't get an official diagnosis until age 51. I have searched (very earnestly and with all my energy like Aspies do!) for support and understanding. Where I live in the United States adult aspergers' is not well understood. I've found that the therapists that think they do usally have kids who are aspergers and have their own unresolved issues. I'm not saying this blindly. Two of the four therapists that I have sought have literally left me curled up in the fetal position because I felt terribly beat up.

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!
I wish Asperger's was better understood. I have spent years trying to get people to understand that neither of my sons is "Rain Man" and that neither of them would harm a fly. There seems to be a real over-zealousness to find criminals that are affected by Asperger's or Bipolar. It would be nice if once in awhile a criminal would be described on the news as "there is nothing wrong with this guy, he's just a nasty person."
Cudoes to you Mamamoe, for pursuing the diagnosis. I am sorry the therapists have been terrible. Don't give up on therapy, it sometimes takes several tries to find a good one. Not all therapists have all the answers, that's for sure.
The title of the book reminded me of a comment in an article I read recently. The author said: "When life hands you manure, grow beautiful roses." I liked that. I think we should both have a whole garden of roses by now!
