Asperger Syndrome Support Group
Asperger syndrome - also referred to as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's, Aspergers or just AS - is one of five neurobiological pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and is characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills, normal to above normal intelligence, and standard language development.
I think it was a famous president who once said that you have to remind yourself of your stupidity a few times a day, and I totally agree. Given the limitations of my nature, I can't help being stupid, all I can do is the best I can at the time. With the humility of that thought the past events loose some of their potency.
I have struggled with obsessive thoughts all my life & a new manifestation is I sometimes repeat thoughts out loud (a whisper, thankfully).
I personally find CBT to be very effective- it helped me get control of my PTSD & I believe that CBT will be my most effective tool in learning about Asperger's.
When I catch myself in a "thought loop" or whispering , I acknowledge the thought loop/whisper. I then move on with my tasks of the day, leaving the thought loop/whisper behind.
It's not so easy at first, it takes practice!!!!! It's better than drugs that numb the brain. To me personally, drugs are useless, because our brains are wired different. Drugs won't fix the brain's wiring we were born with. Building "new wiring pathways" will eventually cause the old pathways to shrivel away.
I also learned to quit beating myself up over it- I don't need to feel self-inflicted pain, because the world is difficult enough to navigate.
Hugs to all, MelodyJane
People on the spectrum can become fixated on things, like their hobbies, and I wonder whether my constantly looping thoughts are a similar kind of fixation. What have other people experienced?
I don't want them out, because they're part of me, but I want them to be faint memories, not everyday realities. I want them stripped of most of their pain. I wish I knew how to do this.
