Hello! I was newly diagnosed with high functioning autism. My daughter was diagnosed at 12. Does anyone else feel a sense of relief when diagnosed? I was however the next thing is I felt like people I'm close with need to educate themselves a little. I don't want people to treat me like I'm mental or use this as a crutch in anyway but there are things I do that they seem to missunderstand about me that I think it would help them deal with things better. Examle: My boyfriend doesn't think I'm empathetic of his feelings. He has stated I come off as cold and aloof. I don't feel like I am. Is this common in relationships with a neurotypical?

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

But there is alot of baggage re the relationship stuff. On this board there have been many women self diagnosing their spouses with asperger's to blame them for the breakdown of their marriage. This seems unfair because generally asperger's doesn't change and so they enter the relationship when it is obvious what the character and behaviour of their husband is and will be. There is even a mini industry in books (c.f cassandra syndrome).
So yes, it helps to put a name to it, it helps some with self knowledge but the disorder itself has a bad and sometimes unfair reputation.
Luckily it seems that diagnosing your spouse as a narcissist or psychopath seems to be gaining popularity now.
But overall while the bipolar diagnosis made me feel like a "normal" person with a disorder - the asperger's made me feel something less than a whole person.
Just to add, I'm 58, I got my diagnosis when I was 50 - I've already been an outsider but this made me feel something a little like a freak. It's complicated.
