Asperger syndrome - also referred to as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's, Aspergers or just AS - is one of five neurobiological pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and is characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills, normal to above normal intelligence, and standard language development.
My son is a very, very intelligent 10 yr old. He is a wonderful child, but I knew from the day I brought him home from the hospital that he was different in many ways.
We started having serious issues with my son when he was around 2 and it's spiraled downhill from there.
My son has been diagnosed as ODD, but I wholeheartedly disagree with the diagnosis. He displays a few of those traits, but only a few. The more that I research Aspergers, the more that I talk with people affected, the more that I feel this is a much better fit and sounds soooo much more like my son.
How do I go about discussing my suspicions with his doctors? I don't see a ton of change in him when he is on his meds (other than he is a little slower and less impulsive) when it comes to attitude or behaviors, so I hate making him take them every day. What good are meds that aren't treating the proper problem? I'm afraid to bring it up with his counselor. We also live in a tiny town, with few options for counselors, therapists, of psychologists. What type of person can make an Aspergers diagnosis? I honestly don't think that the professionals that we have around here are equipped for a child like mine. I don't want to self diagnose...I am not a doctor...but I seem to know my son better than the docs, and there ODD diagnosis is far from correct. That much I know...

how to discuss with the dr, that all depends on the dr, my daughters first dr refused to do anything different than his first diagnosis , ,
look up autism counseling centers in your area on google, or the phone book.
I will explain it to you the way they did where my daughter goes, aspergers is a combination of alot of different things the autism spectrum is broad, ADD, ODD anxiety and alot, they have alot of different quirks about them and they can be misdiagnosed.
changing drs for us made a world of difference, i wish you luck your journey is not an easy
We went through several different therapists before we found one that we love. We had one therapist that told me that my husband needed to quit his job, go to college and get an 8-4 job so he could be home with my children more and than he made my son who has an anxiety disorder, sit out in the waiting room all alone. He cried and the therapist got annoyed. We left him! Anyways, my point is if you don't feel comfortable with the therapist and what they are saying, try someone else. We have to travel about 20 mins to see Anthony's therapist but I love her and wouldn't change. Good luck! It is a tough journey but you will eventually find the answers you are looking for.
