diagnosis gave me license to speak with other aspies in forums like this and identify myself as one because of diagnosis, not speculation.
i refused to claim i was an aspie before i was diagnosed as some do.

i mean it was mostly a clarification, then the other thing. i just didnt want to assume. plus i dont think i have an unconscious affinity for patterns like wally, but that's fictional and open to interpretation or factual rebuttal which i cant provide.

I have a male friend who wanted a diagnosis, took computer tests and each one scored aspberger's. Now he doesn't care about diagnosis. It is my understanding that AS is a developmental disability and there are no meds for the AS. Meds can help with other disorders that may be present such as bipolar. A diagnosis does help. The reason being it can direct you to the proper path. AS ppl. can learn social skills and coping skills. Hope this information is of help.

My son is 13, with schoolage children today it is helpful because they can get IEP (Individual Education Programs) specialized to the way they learn. My son has benefited greatly and is now pushed out into all regular classes except reading because of writing deficiencies but that is coming a long and there is talk of putting him in a regular class. Many colleges are developing programs to help these students succeed. Recognizing that they need to be independent but still may need some help keeping things organized along the way. These are things I am working on with him to ensure that he can have every opportunity at his fingers that anyone else does. It is not an excuse, it's just a different way of learning. Sometimes just knowing that is what you are dealing with gives you direction and there are many books, speakers, online support groups like this that you can get help and guidance from that if you were still grasping straws you wouldn't necessarily know where to go. Thanks all for your responses. It's helping some to understand, but not completely. IEP can be helpful obviously, although I don't understand whether it was put in place because of social or because of learning problems. But did anyone get education on how to behave in social situations, are there even such programs/therapies? Asides from self-awareness, what changes??

My son did. When he was younger and even since starting highschool this year we have implicated social stories into part of his speech therapy in elementary school. Also, with him entering into his teens we have a had a couple given to us to help him to understand certain situations that have occurred. It can be part of their educational program. I believe an IEP can go both ways. With my son we did have both social and learning issues addressed. It is all a part of his learning truthfully. The teaching/reading of social stories is more or a way or preparing to know how to handle a situation when they occur. Although, it made more sense to my son to read them when he had encountered it because it made more sense than imagining the situation. We also did alot of role playing which they also did in speech and other therapies we did. When we would watch certain shows he could pick out different types of behavior but couldn't always catch himself while he was in the situation. We did once record them in speech during lunch one day and they had to pick out 2 things they though they needed to work on. He was right on the money. Hope these are some helpful ideas. There are books at the local library you can get on social stories...there are also a ton of online ones you can print out.
